What is a timely filing denial?
A timely filing denial is when a payer refuses to pay a claim because it says the claim was submitted after the filing deadline in the contract or plan.
Filing limits vary by payer and contract. A denial is invalid if the claim was in fact filed on time, for example when the original submission was accepted by the clearinghouse before the deadline. It usually appears with CARC 29.
How to spot it
- Keep clearinghouse acceptance reports: they are the proof of on-time submission.
