Underpayment recovery is one of the few levers a practice can pull that does not require negotiating with payers, hiring more staff, or changing what the practice does clinically. The money is already earned. It is sitting in payer remittances that did not match the contracted rate. Recovering it is largely a question of having the time, the data infrastructure, and the persistence to chase variances that individually look small but collectively add up to real revenue.

Kasie is a software engineer turned founder. He spent his career building systems for some of the most demanding environments in tech: real-time financial data infrastructure at Bloomberg, the platform that became X (formerly Twitter), and payments at Square.
His introduction to healthcare came through a project on the No Surprises Act and the federal Independent Dispute Resolution process. What started as a technical problem (parsing payer documents and flagging underpayments) turned into a deeper realization: physicians and billing companies are systematically losing money they have already earned, and the existing tools are not built for the practices that need them most.
The largest underpayment recovery vendors serve hospital systems and large physician groups. Independent practices and the small billing companies that serve them have been left to chase underpayments manually, or to write them off entirely. Vareo exists to change that.
